PPGENF/UFPI holds first Master's defense just 12 months after joining the Program

PPGENF/UFPI holds first Master's degree defense after only 12 months of joining the Program
The Postgraduate Program in Nursing (PPGENF) at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) reached a significant milestone by holding, on January 29, the first Master's degree defense by a student after 12 months of joining the Program. The event marks an important step forward in the integration between the institution's undergraduate and graduate courses.

Since the beginning of the 2021-2024 four-year period, PPGENF has implemented the project, with the aim of strengthening ties between undergraduate and graduate programs. In this project, new students in the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing were introduced to the program's activities, including teaching, research, and extension goals. The project aims to build a more competitive and integrative curriculum, encouraging students to get involved in academic activities from the first years of the course.

In addition, the PPGENF updated its Bylaws based on Resolution 658/2024 of CEPEX/UFPI, aligning it with new academic requirements and expectations. The success of this integration was demonstrated in the Master's defense of student Álvaro Sepúlveda Carvalho Rocha, supervised by Professor Lidya Tolstenko Nogueira.

Álvaro, who entered the Master's program with an outstanding trajectory, began his academic career with scientific initiation in the second semester of his undergraduate degree, actively participated in extension activities, and was present at several scientific events, both national and international. These actions resulted in publications in high-impact journals, a factor that directly contributed to his entry into the Master's program and, later, positioned him for the Doctorate.

Professor Rosilane Magalhães, coordinator of the PPGENF, highlighted the importance of integration between undergraduate and graduate programs, emphasizing the welcoming attitude of undergraduate professors towards students. The professor explained that this approach expands opportunities for participation in research and facilitates the transition of students to graduate programs. She also emphasized that the results of this model can help reduce regional inequalities in the time taken to obtain a doctorate degree, in addition to generating more opportunities for students.

“This innovation at the PPGENF reflects an academic model that seeks to strengthen initial training with graduate qualifications, preparing students for high-quality academic and professional performance,” concluded Professor Rosilane Magalhães.
